Tom Lawhead retired from banking at the age of 39. It wasn’t because of luck or a windfall; it was planned. Tom’s been on a wonderful journey, but there are plenty of downsides to his story as well.
The motivation for writing this book came from singing and playing guitar in nursing homes, adult day care, young adult special needs day care and hospitals. Tom has also played in more than his share of night clubs, bars and fraternity houses, etc., over the past 40 years. He's seen firsthand, every day, lives nearing their ends, endless caregiving and sacrifice, and the affect it has on everyone around them. In the latter venues, he's witnessed the overwhelming destruction of health and life from alcohol and drug abuse and poor decision making. Tom often asks himself, “What have their lives been like? Did they do everything they wanted to? Did they leave important issues unresolved? What about their families and the enormous responsibilities, challenges and hardships they are faced with every day?"
In this book, Tom candidly shares his failures, weaknesses, regrets, as well as many lessons about how to avoid the same pitfalls. There are a few success stories, too. He gives a glimpse of what true happiness is all about and how to achieve it. There is no shortage of practical advice regarding family, money, careers, faith, sickness and even death.
